Benny Wenda Imprisonment
For allegedly directing a procession of participants in an independence protest, Wenda was put on trial in 2002. Authorities in Indonesia claim that those present killed a policeman and set two shops on fire during the violent protest.
The charges against him, according to Wenda, were politically motivated and made at a time when the government was cracking down on leaders of the independence movement. The key pro-independence figure Theys Eluay was killed a few months earlier as a result of this crackdown.
According to media sources, Wenda would have received a 25-year prison term if found guilty. During his detention, he apparently received death threats as well.
Wenda escaped prison while on trial. Helped by West Papua independence activists he fled across the border to neighboring Papua New Guinea and was later reunited with his wife Maria at a refugee camp.

Free West Papua Campaign
Benny became the main spokesperson for the Free West Papua Campaign after moving to the UK. The campaign was started in 2004 by a group of pro-Papuan activists in Oxford. The campaign’s declared objectives are to raise public awareness of the plight of human rights and the aspirations of West Papuans for independence by lobbying governments and building support among the general public.
The Free West Papua Campaign movement in the UK has expanded to include permanent regional groups, student organizations at British institutions, offices in Oxford, The Hague, and Port Moresby, as well as permanent student groups.
Wenda embarked on a “Freedom Tour” in February 2013 that took her to the US, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu with the intention of bringing attention to the topic of self-determination. At the New Zealand national legislature, he was prevented from making a speech.
The government, according to opposition parties, is afraid of upsetting the Indonesian government because it is a significant economic partner. The decision “went against the spirit of Parliament,” according to politicians from the Greens, Labour, and Mana.
Mohammed Abassi, the Lord Mayor of Oxford, and the nearby MP Andrew Smith joined Wenda in April 2013 to celebrate the opening of the Free West Papua Campaign’s new offices.
The Indonesian government was incensed by the opening and summoned the British ambassador to Indonesia to give an explanation for why the UK had let the office open. In front of 2,500 spectators, Wenda received a standing ovation in May 2013 when she gave a TEDx talk at the Sydney Opera House.
The Indonesian government reacted angrily to his appearance once more, filing a formal complaint with the Australian government shortly after he took the stage.
